Forget the north end! Why waste your time waiting in line for overpriced, mediocre Italian food!? Come to Cafe Porto Bello instead and experience true Boston! Such a charming little restaurant with very nice interior decor. The lady was amazing and truly a Boston experience to talk to, but utterly charming and lovely!

It only gets a second star because the pizza can be very good. I remember when this joint first opened up in the mid-'90s. I lived right around the corner and tried it a few times. The pizza was really good by then-Southie standards. I found the service to be unfriendly, but I just figured it was because they thought I was a punk kid and wanted me gone ASAP. Fast-forward to May 2015, and I'm here for the first time in forever, this time with family and a couple friends of the family. My aunt had an almost impossible time getting the waitress' attention to get a drink. It was around 5 on a Saturday afternoon, but it wasn't crowded. We had to wait 15 to 20 minutes to order, too. Is it too much to ask that your waitstaff act like they don't mind you being in there? They did somehow forget to charge us for our drinks, so there's something positive.

So this is not a review for the food. I feel like I can give 1 star because I will no longer be enjoying the food thanks to an extremely rude employee. We regularly get takeout from Porto Bello's and the guy who answers the phone may be the most miserable human I have ever met or talked to. He is condescending and literally sounds frustrated to take your order. When you get there to pick it up, he greets you with the same crotchety attitude. The food isn't good enough to deal with this shlub.

I was visiting Boston for a conference and stayed nearby. I came here by myself for comfort food at the end of the day. I had the chicken marsala and a salad. I also got ziti on the side. I believe the pasta was made from scratch. It hit the spot. The price was reasonable. I highly recommend it.

The pizza there is out of this world, and they have authentic Italian dishes you'd expect to be from some expensive place in the North End. The restaurant itself is pretty small so there can be a wait on busy night - takeout is always a good option but a few times the food hasn't been ready on time. Overall, definitely would recommend checking it out!

Love this little hole in the wall! Definitely authentic tasting Italian food (although I'm pretty sure there aren't too many real Italian employees). For starters I'm a big fan of the bruschetta! It comes with four large pieces and it's very refreshing. The pizza here is delicious. The red sauce has a great flavor! It definitely reminds me of a real Italian pizza and it's always fresh. Side note: Be prepared to wait a while, whether you're picking up or getting delivery. At times it can take well over an over for 1 large non-specialty pizza. Obviously doesn't stop me from going back but it's something to mention! I've tried quite a few of their pasta dishes. The Fusilli alla Vodka with chicken is one of my favorites. The chicken is cooked perfectly and paired with the pasta and sauce.. Delicious! The lobster ravioli is on point. Occasionally they'll offer it as an entrée special and when they do.. It's my go-to (see photo). The staff is very friendly which to me, is always a pleasure. They give you just the right amount of attention in a small restaurant setting. Overall, give this place a try! It's one of a kind in this area and I plan on continuing my patronage.

Great service and always fresh ingredients. I suggest the Bolognese with the homemade fusilli! Remember to bring cash!

Best pizza in Southie, bar none! The hidden gem of the neighborhood. The eggplant & ricotta pizza and the Italian sausage & pepper pizza are as good as it gets. I've tried pizza from the North End, NYC, New Haven and Providence and this place is just as good.

What an awesome hidden gem in South Boston. The lobster ravioli is to die for as is anything done with fusilli! Only down side- cash only!

  • Harmony H.

This place is delicious. It's definitely a hidden gem in Southie. When you are walking or driving by, you probably wouldn't even notice it. But if you are in the area and are craving good pasta and pizza then I absolutely recommend eating here. The fried mozzarella appetizer, fusilli with vodka sauce and the fried eggplant pizza are all to die for. Only downside is that they don't take reservations and it's cash only. It's also a little pricier for Southie, but you would be paying A LOT more in the North End for high-quality food like this.

  • Michelle H.

I live for the pasta bolognese. Seriously amazing. Warm happiness in a bowl. Need to figure out how they make this. Pizza is pretty good as well. Place is cash only and pretty tiny but worth the wait

Ordered pizza for delivery and waited over 2.5 hours before cancelling. Called twice, both times told it was on the way.

My husband and I USUALLY (key word usually) love this place. The last time we went there, however, was terrible. The waitress acted like she wanted us gone from the second we sat down! It was a Friday at 7! I ordered the shrimp with spaghetti and my husband ordered the chicken parmigiana and both were terrible! My shrimp was so chewy, I actually had to spit it out and my husbands chicken parm was cold. The waitress literally did not give us the time of day. We used to go here all the time. We're never trying it again. We're never trying it again. We're never trying to again.

Small seating area but food is good and great ambience inside. Best pizza in southie.

Talk about your hidden gem in Southie! Delicious Italian food, friendly staff, and can't-be-beat prices. We had the Sausage, Broccoli Rabe, and Hot Peppers (good), Lobster ravioli special (incredible!), and split the fried mozzarella (pretty good). They also offer takeout which you actually walk through the restaurant into the kitchen to get. Somewhat of a weird process but their cheese pizza is the best I've had in Southie! ($10 bucks for a large cheese? Gimme 2!!) Only a dozen or so tables so prepare for a potential wait if you go at peak times. And remember, cash only! Overall, a great little place in Southie to get some good Italian grub for a date night or to bring a few friends.

I have gone to this location for several years. The food is decent but the service at the Southie location is terrible- hence the 1 star review. Tonight we placed an order for delivery at 7pm and were told it would be 45mins to an hour. After 1hr30 mins, we called and were told it was on its way. After 2 hours, we called again and were told it was on its way but they didn't know when. No apologies offered. "But it's been 2 hours?" was followed by the rude guy hanging up on us. I mean, isn't the point of being a restaurant to actually provide food? It's not the first time we've had poor service here but it will certainly be the last. Take your business and hard earned money elsewhere.

RUDE RUDE RUDE...If this place doesn't clean up its act...it will be put out of business by the growing list of clean, new, Southie restaurants that have much better food anyway, much better service and who actually act like they care about your business. I have always thought the food here was decent, and I kind of liked the fact that they are truly a Southie original, but recently....I had an experience that will lead me to never give them my business again. I placed an order of a pizza and a pasta dish only to find out once I arrived that someone else had picked up my order. The kid that took my order just gave me a dumb look and didn't even apologize..when I asked how this could happen and if he verified the persons name...I just got another dumb look. I know what you are thinking...this could happen to anyone..and I agree...it probably happens all the time in take out...but how it was handled was what was so disappointing. Everyone kind of shrugged their shoulders like oh well, not my problem. Then, a woman named Patty very rudely told me I was in her way (you have to stand in the kitchen to get your to-go order). When I called back and asked the staff to have the owner call me...I never got a call back..shocker. Several times since as I have been walking by the place, Patty stands out front smoking and shouting on her cell phone....just trashy...at least move it to the back of the restaurant. Don't waste your time...there are plenty of other great places to eat...and frankly...I'd rather walk to Italy than eat here again.

Reliable italian fare. Never had a bad meal here and my goodness, the affordability of this place! It's not top of the line north end good, but it definitely wouldn't be out of place on a corner in the north end. Chicken Parm is solid, all the pasta monday dishes are good (soup, salad, pasta dish for $10). Reminds me a lot of the Florentine Cafe in the north end food/flavor wise, but mostly just italian pasta dishes. Do what you will with that.

    (4)
  • Mike F.

I have been here several time and have NEVER had a bad experience. I either order the special or veal saltimbocca (ask for the pasta with the veal, not on the side...you won't regret it). We usually start with the fried mozzarella or bruschetta and go from there. Atmosphere is intimate and classy. I would try to get there on the earlier side because they never rush you out and sometimes can get full quickly.

  • Ashley K.

Like the food- unfortunately the delivery service is terrible. Ordered two pizzas that arrived an hour and half later ice cold. Called the restaurant to let them know and the lady on the phone didn't offer any sort of apology or compensation. Just terrible service. When you order delivery a big part of the experience is the food arriving hot and on time- I would order from somewhere else or pick up.

Just like the North End, only in Southie. A very friendly place, great food. Prices are very reasonable. Just be aware that it doesn't take credit cards, or reservations. I have a number of visitors from out of town who insist we go there everytime they come to visit.

  • M L.

Great spot for reasonably priced Italian food and wine. Restaurant is small but seating is usually available without much wait. Also a great delivery or takeout choice if you live in Southie and aren't looking for something as expensive or fancy as Salvatores in the Seaport.

  • Kcb B.

This a hidden jewel in Southie and really the only authentic Italian restaurant. In my opinion, it's the best pizza in Southie by far. The pasta dishes are really solid. I don't think I've had a better fusilli in a long time. The salads are not the best but I've never had a complaint about this place. Beer and wine are the drinks of choice and its cash only. Great spot all around.

  • L L.

Neighborhood Gem,.. Love it in the winter, summer, spring and fall. Great Italian Food at a very reasonable price... They are also open in the afternoons for a great lunch,, The pizza, at the restaurant and take out as well, is the best by far... Do yourself a favor, and stop in!!!

  • Kathleen C.

I recently moved to Southie and discovered this spot. Prices are great (cash only); food is delicious and servers are friendly. This is not the spot for that "special occasion," but it is the place for a good meal at a great price.

  • Marie F.

Went here on a sunday for family party. The waitresses were great but food was very lacking. I was given a special meal, due to allergies, of grilled chicken which was served with a steak knife.. The knife could not even cut thru it. Very disappointed that this is a place that I can no longer enjoy.

    (2)
  • Michelle B.

Amazing. Small restaurant with about ten tables but unreal food, cooked to order, and homemade pasta. I recommend the homemade fusilli pasta with chicken and vodka sauce... even though everything really is great. They deliver too and have solid pizzas.

    (5)
  • Mike B.

Good food. Solid service. One caveat: ask your server to open wine bottles at the table. Ordered an expensive bottle of wine, and our server brought an uncorked bottle to the table. The server said they open wine out back to let the wine breathe. Translation: You just bought two-buck-chuck in a really nice bottle.

Cafe Porto Bello is a great hidden italian gem in Southie. Had the shrimp with vodka sauce, tortellini alfredo, and lobster ravioli. All were great and reasonably priced. Alfredo was a little creamy, but if that floats your boat, then go for it! Portions were spot on with the price. Take out can be somewhat of an odd experience. You walk through the dining area and into what seems to be the kitchen where you make the CASH ONLY transaction. Still, it's great!

    (4)
  • Nat T.

Can't say for sure, but the lobster raviloli and the chicken, broccoli, ziti sure seemed like it had been frozen, not made fresh. It'd be worth it on Monday nights for $9.95, but if you have the option pay a few bucks more per plate and get something amazing in the North End. Wine was average, service was OK and place was loud. Cash only.

    (2)
  • B D.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE! I've been here on several occasions - amazing pizza and pasta. Loved the salad and calamari too. Wine is decently priced. It's a great date place or a place to go with friends. Just remember they are cash only!

  • Ann Marie M.

I don't want to brag about this place in fear of having more people know about this spot; but it's really good! I went with my parents and boyfriend on a Monday night for dinner, and we were surprised about the Monday deal- soup, salad and pasta for $10...yum! It sounds like a ton of food, but the portions are the "correct" size, so you don't walk out feeling totally stuffed. The wine list isn't extensive, but it's decent enough to have a nice bottle of red and pasta. Everything on the menu is reasonably priced; not like the North End where you're paying for the location. Our server was really attentive although it was a busy night (there was a table of 9), and made sure we were well taken care of. The place does fill up quick, so get there early, but be prepared to still wait. It's a great neighborhood place, and I will be back!

By far the best pizza in Boston. Probably tied with Emma's in Cambridge on my list of favorites, but totally different menus. If you love pizza, and the way the Italians do it -- Porto Bello is where you need to be. I strongly suggest the fried eggplant and ricotta pizza, the sweet italian sausage and hot pepper pizza and the garlic and spinach pizza. Honestly, I doubt you'll go wrong with any option. Just rememberrrr cash only (but it's cheap)!!

  • Christina G.

I love this place for pizza and Italian in Southie. If you live in the area and haven't tried it yet, you don't know what you're missing! It's cute and homey inside. The pizza is fab (best in Southie hands down) and the Italian food is delicious. I've only tried the chicken parm and chicken alla vodka (not on the menu, but I think they will make it if you ask) You can't go wrong with either of those or anything else on the menu I'm sure.

  • Chris F.

A local favorite, this place is pretty much everything I like about restaurants rolled up into one easy, cozy, enjoyable, tasty, inexpensive, fast, and fresh experience. The pizza's are the best - the dough is exquisite, the toppings are fresh, and the price is amazing for the quality. Personal favorites are the prosciutto and arugula and the hot pepper and sweet Italian sausage, plus the Caesar salad is dope. Oh and they do $10 pasta dinners on Monday's wallet says thanks. Only downside is that they are cash only and they aren't open Sundays when my hangovers need pizza the most. But for the best pizza in Southie I guess I'll have to deal.

  • Natasha L.

Great local place. Hey deliver too so we tend to do that more thn sit inside which is tiny. I always get the chicken Marsala which is so good and huge portion. Hubby always gets tortellini Alfredo. I have also had the Shrimp pasta in vodka sauce which is really tasty. Heard pizza is good too

  • H. S.

Honestly, most restaurants in Southie are awful and food here is at least decent. The service is very poor though and take out orders are always wrong. With ten tables and several wait staff, they always seem rude, rushed and overwhelmed.

Porto Bello is such a great surprise. First of all- do not let the green tacky awning fool you. I thought we were walking into a major dive, and I would see flies everywhere in the restaurant. As soon as we walked in, it felt like we were in a small restaurant in the North End. Very well decorated, great brick walls, and great decorations. Food is great! Girlfriend did the Monday special, and got soup, salad, and a huge portion of ravioli for $10. The ravioli were overstuffed with a pesto cream sauce- yum. I had the linguine with white clam sauce. Huge portion of clams, and the sauce was just right to no be overbearing. I could not finish it- and it was only $14! Service is great, and attentive. They treat you like a local, and since we live down the street, I hope soon they will greet us by name.

We moved to Southie a couple of years ago and pretty quickly discovered that this is THE BEST pizza in Boston that we've found. Thin, slightly chewy crust under toppings and a not too big, crispy crust on the edge. Cheese covers the pie, and toppings have all been delicious. Try the roasted peppers, not many places have them and they're a yummy addition. Pasta dishes are also good, better by far than anything we've tried in the North End. The vodka sauce is especially good. As previous reviewers have said, my only negative is the very bland bread and oil, I would expect better from them. Otherwise highly recommend! Cash only so be prepared!

Cozy and charming little restaurant with delicious pizzas and good pastas at great prices. The waitresses are also very friendly! Definitely need to come one of the Mondays to try their $10 soup, salad, pasta dinner special as well! While small, this place has that quaint feeling. The waitresses and food quality make one feel like the food is home made. Loved their pizzas; the one pasta I have tried here is very decent as well. Will be coming back:-)

Amazing place to eat even tho Stevie is family. The pizza is a hidden gem. I'm big on pizza and this really made my top 10. Dishes are great im big on Chicken Marcella. Also, wine has a great selection.

Delicious. Small but great food. Cash only, but ATM is down the street. the antipasto platter is huge and the two pasta dishes we split were both great. Will definitely go back.

Cafe Porto Bello is wonderful; the food, the atmosphere, the prices...everything about it! There is a serious lack of good eating spots in Southie, but Porto Bello is always my go-to spot. The wine list is small, but extremely affordable and good. Some of my favorites: the broccoli rab and sausage pasta, chicken piccata, and tortellini Alfredo. Their eggplant pesto and fried mozz apps are also delish! The antipasto plate is HUGE and cheap. Everything is great! Also, they are huge portions so I always have leftovers. Don't miss the Monday night special: 3 courses for $9.99. You can't go wrong with this deal. They accept cash only, but there are ATM's close if you forget. I go about 3 times a month and Porto Bello never dissapoints.

I love this place. My boyfriend and I have been here 4 times so far and we are so glad we found it. We are from CT and I havent been able to find delicious pizza anywhere since we moved to Boston. We have been going there every Friday since we found it and we look forward to our pizza date all week long. They have beer & wine and their portions are huge. Caesar Salad is DELICIOUS and then we go with the Margarita Pizza extra crispy with grilled chicken. Its a cozy little spot and if you go early enough there is usually parking right in front. If you are looking for a good antipasto it is HUGE & delicious. Also Prices are AWESOME only con is it's cash only but theres an ATM right down the street :-)

  • Kristen F.

Great little hole in the wall with yummy Italian food. Portions are big, prices are right, and the staff is friendly. Perfect place for a date or for take out, but I wouldn't come with a big group. The entrance is a bit weird and if you're picking up there isn't really a register to go to - you basically just walk back towards the kitchen and grab a staff person. If the take out crowd ever got too big, they'd probably have to wait on the street or really impose on the eat in patrons. Also, I found it odd that you have to walk THROUGH THE KITCHEN to get to the bathroom but at the same time, at least you know they're not hiding anything!

I ride my bike with DTP from Kendall Square, through B. Common, down WInter, to Summer, turn right on Broadway, a couple blocks, and BAMMM!! Hello, Porto Bello Cafe! I should give a shout out to Devon, because she's my girl. And she's from Southie. I saw her earlier. Hey, Devon! (This was NOT a second thought). I sit with DTP in this cozy, 12-or-so-table local Italian eatery, and peruse the menu: starters, pizza, primi, and secondi, yum, yummy, yumm-o, and oh yes. We're kindly welcomed by our waitress and playfully teased by the other waiter. It's obvious the other patrons are regulars here. But, the dinner-rush is dying out by 8:30 on this warm Saturday night. Not a bad thing when the venue is only slightly larger than Antonia's (Davis Square). My meal comes out. Large plate, at least 14 inches in diameter, piled with linguine and topped with two breasts of chicken rolled around salty prosciutto and mozzarella, and all of this drizzled with a mushroom marsala sauce-a. Yumma. All of this is well worth 15. and the glass of Chianti for only 4.5. By the time I finished this two-meal plate of food, all of those pedal strokes became worth nada.

Best pizza in Southie, hands down. Call ahead though and take it to go. So small inside there and it's usually packed. I've always had excellent service there and can't recall ever getting a bad meal. Calamari is great too.

Cash only, a limited wine list, a basic beer selection, and a crowded dining area might give you the wrong impression. Don't let these things scare you off because you'll miss out on a tasty meal and a warm, friendly environment. This place, like a lot of other reviews say, is a hidden gem in South Boston. I'm new to the neighborhood so a friend and I decided to try it on a Friday night. We popped in around 8 o'clock and it was busy, but luckily we didn't have to wait. I ordered the pollo bracciolettini -- chicken stuffed with prosciutto and mozzarella in a marsala wine sauce. They served it over a bed of linguini and the dish was delicious. My friend had the chicken, ziti, and broccoli, which you can't really go wrong with, but I tried some and it was pretty good. I would definitely go back as it's in my neighborhood and is a cute place with good food and great service. It's definitely worth checking out if you are in the area.

Home of my favorite pizza ever!! I pack away an entire "Smoked mozzarella, proscuitto and fresh arugula" pizza all on my own. Although eating there is cozy/romantic, they do in fact deliver.

FIND! Porto Bello is a hidden gem along East Broadway in Southie. After moving to the area from South End (Boston's restaurant mecca, in my opinion), I was pleasantly suprised to encouter Porto Bello a few weeks ago. The food is incredibly inexpensive for what you get...heaping servings of hot, fresh pasta and other Italian specialties. I had a pasta with broccoli rabe and sauteed hot peppers garlic and olive oil (it was supposed to come with sausage but I skipped it). It was darn good. My sister had the rigatoni with tomato sauce which was definitely solid. The wins of the night, though, were the tortolini in a cream sauce (I can't remember what it was exactly) and the create-your-own-personal-pizza (with fried eggplant and salami). Both were amazing. You won't pay more than $14 for a non-seafood giant pasta dish, the beers are $3 and a glass of wine was ony $4. I believe I saw bottles on the wine list for as little as $18. Service was attentive and the ambiance was cute. Cash only though!

I used to live in the North End so I'm not going to shit you and tell you 'it's a little piece of Italy in Southie", having said that, I love this place and it's right up the street from me now. They didn't try and be cute with the menu, it is what it is, Italian classics. The place is small but they didn't cram a ton of tables and chairs in there so you don't feel like you are sitting on top of each other. The lady and I were in there one time and we each had an entree, a bottle of wine, dessert, and I think I sucked down 2 or 3 beers......i think the total was like $75 w/tip and the food was great, the service was even better.....like cool mom's serving you food...and who doesn't like cool mom's serving you food. I had the Saltimbocca but the pizza's are really good as well, i have taken out many a pie, any way check it out if you live in Southie.

Great place for a date......and the Best Pizza in Southie!! The pizza is amazing......I regularly get the Hot and Sweet (Hot Cherry Peppers and Sweet Italian Sausage) Pie for take out. The place is very small and intimate, which makes a great place for a date, but not for a group larger than 4. The service is pretty slow, but that just allows for more wine and conersation. Cash only and quite reasonably priced, you can get an app, split a meal, and a bottle of wine for $40-$50.

  • Melissa M.

I LOVE THIS PLACE! For several reasons! 1. The food is fantastic - homemade pasta and you can sub for whole wheat pasta. The lobster rav app is a dream! 2. It's super cheap - dishes range from 9-15 bucks. Wine list is just OK, but it's cheap too! 3. THE PIZZA! So damn good, I sometimes get it for takeout. 4. The waitstaff is pretty friendly - very tentative to our needs!

This place is SO good. I'm in love with their Melanzane Parmigiana. The pesto sauce they serve it over is to die for. I also love the Pollo alla Richie. Always a good meal here.

"When you're here, you're family." Ever hear that on an Olive Garden commercial and wonder whose family would dislike them that much? I mean seriously, my mom's idea of haute cuisine was sheppard's pie, and we STILL weren't allowed to eat at the Olive Garden. Copyright infringement aside, that should actually be Café Porto Bello's slogan. The staff here is warm and welcoming. Don't you dare linger by the front door, you'll be ushered happily into the smallish dining room and promptly deposited into a chair...but not in a way that all seems harried or cold. Rather it's as if they've been waiting just for you all along. Tableside chatter will make you feel like you've know the wait staff for years, and yet they still maintain a level of professionalism that allows for you to ask for things without feeling like you're bossing a friend around. And obviously, most importantly, the food. The pizzas are delicious (and this isn't just by Southie standards), simultaneously chewy and crispy crust, a delightfully tangy sauce, and just the perfect amount of cheese. You know what I mean, none of the sliding off crap, but also enough to cover the whole pie. Their version of the margherita is a wonder of fresh ingredients, and the ricotta cheese and eggplant is a blend of textures and flavors that far belies its simplicity. The vinegar pepper pork chop is a prime example of what this dish is supposed to be, tender pork with a sauce souped up by crispy roasted potatoes. The saltimbocca served alongside sautéed spinach is a classic standby that will not disappoint. Even the simple house salad, a borderline boring blend of iceberg, shaved carrots, tomatoes, and onions, is saved by the freshness of its parts. They do a decent takeout business, and as Debra pointed out, you actually go back into the kitchen to pick it up or place your order. This threw me off a little the first time, but it's certainly grown on me. I always appreciate a place that isn't afraid to let you see their kitchen!

This restaurant is clearly overrated. The food is DEFINITIVELY not authentic Italian. Excessive use of cream and sauces, sausages and other strongly tasting ingredients makes you leave with the feeling of having eaten too much of the wrong stuff. Pasta, although it was advertised as home made, was 100% not home made, as all noodles were perfectly shaped and identical. They had 5 waiters for only about 15 tables, but service was slow and unorganized. We had to order most drinks about 2-3 times until they arrived. Wines by the glass are cheap and all 3 I tasted were disappointing, the house Chianti was worst. I don't really understand all the other reviews...

Got take out pizza from here the other night (thanks to reading the reviews on Yelp). It was very good. I won't say it was the best pizza I have ever had (I'm a pizza snob) but it was good, quality pizza. The price was right too. A large spinach & mushroom pizza, a house salad (which was nothing to write home about) and a caprese salad (much better than the house) for $20. The best thing about the place was the service (and I didn't even dine in). When I walked in I was led to the back by the kitchen to place my order. The woman said "Come in, don't be shy. It's just like grandma's kitchen." Everyone working there was so kind and so friendly. The dining area looked adorable and it would be the perfect place for a low-key dinner. I will definitely go back and dine-in and try one fo their entrees next time.

I have eaten here probably three or four times, but we get take out here far more frequently. Pros - Small, cozy, intimate restaurant - Personable service, whether you're dining in or taking out - Delicious food - favorites include sausage and hot pepper pizza, gamberi a la vodka, tortellini with peas and ham - Very reasonably priced for the portions you get (you always get two meals worth) - They now deliver (although this could be considered a con since I'm not getting the exercise walking down there and home). Cons - They only take cash -The bread they serve is very run of the mill bland white italian/french loaf - The waiting area is in the tiny entryway; they have a sign that asks you not to enter the restaurant while you're waiting. I understand that they don't want to crowd an already small restaurant with extra people, but it's a bit awkward. Waiting on the sidewalk is no big deal provided the weather is warm, though. Definitely a hidden gem worth checking out.

I guess I'm a bit of regular here as my GF & I eat here 3-5 times/month and know the cast of characters. Anyway, this is a great little Italian place in Southie. The pizza is incredible and several of the meals are great. Included in that list would be the Vitello Saltimbocca, and my favorites, Pollo Bracciolettini and Tortellini Alfredo. Sure, there's a little sass when it comes to the waitstaff, but they know their stuff and move quickly. As someone mentioned, Diane is great and we always look forward to having her wait on our table. Danny is great as well and always make sure our wine glasses are full! Wish they took credit cards as there have been many trips to the Mt Washington Bank during dessert! Also, they don't take reservations (although, given our relationship, we have been able to secure tables for larger parties - not sure this done for everyone).

Last Saturday we wanted a nice night out and had heard some great things about Porto Bello. We live in Southie so it's right up the street from us. They don't take reservations and it's pretty small (maybe 15 tables?) so we were ready for a wait. Thankfully, when we arrived we got seated right away at the only two top available. We did notice that tables become open pretty quickly after we were seated so I'm sure the wait wouldn't have been too long. We got a bottle of white wine, a cheap pino, which tasted great and fit out budget. We didn't get an app, but they give some french bread and butter and there is a bottle of seasoned olive oil on the table. Our waitress gave us a second helping. I ordered the chicken, broccolli, and ziti and it was fantastic! The garlic cream sauce wasn't too heavy (great on the stomach) and the chicken and broccolli were perfectly cooked, as was the pasta. Just enough of a portion although I probably could have taken some home. My boyfriend got the tortellini alfredo with proscutto and peas (? can't remember the veg) and it was also great. Same light sauce, just enough! Afterwards we got a single chocolate chip canoli which was the perfect sized sweet for a filling pasta dinner. The meal was about $80 with tip and wine so not terrible! Most entrees were from $10-$15, and some in the $15-$20 range. It has the same feel like you're in the North End and we had a great time! I would definitely go here again!

It's Monday and you know what that means, Portobello's THREE course dinner special for $9.99, I kid you not. Why order takeout? For the price of a large sub, can of tonic and a bag of chips, you get soup, salad and an entree, fresh & cooked to order. The $9.99 Dinner Special selection has approx nine or ten entrees to choose from & they also offered a Nightly Special and you can order from the regular menu too. The soup was an aromatic white navy bean with cannelloni. It was piping hot and delicious; perfect for a late afternoon/early evening that turned blustery cold. I had salad with the sweet vidalia dressing, delicious.. Everyone gets bread, yum.. He ordered Chicken Parm from the regular menu and I ordered a "ten dollar" special, linguine with a rose sauce with peas & prosciutto. The pasta was al dente & I could not finish the portion they gave me, too big. So here's the breakdown: two soups, one salad, bread, two entrees, $23 dollars! The atmosphere is cozy, the service is on the spot good & you can park in Rite Aid without worry.. It makes Monday's a little nicer.

Great Italian food in Southie, the oil they serve with the bread is terrible however. The price is so so and the service is ok. Diet coke was flat, but the food is very good. They only take cash.

I've been to Porto Bello a couple times and I love it. I always call in and take out. Their lobster ravioli with ameretto sauce is my favorite. It's really small and very akward getting to go because you have to stand in the back room with all the employees and wait for your food. everyone kind of stares at you and makes you feel uncomfortable. But OTher then that, the food is exceptional!!!!!!!!

Best Italian restaurant in Boston. I lived in the North End for several years, and this place is so much better than anything I ever had in the North End. The prices are amazing too.

I really like Cafe Porto Bello the food is so good. The pizza is quite tasty but is a little on the small side and I think there is only one size. Speaking of small the restaurant itself is tiny. There is probably 10 tables in the whole place. But it has a cozy/romantic feel to it. I highly reccomend it. Get the chicken, broccoli and ziti it's not as good as Pat's of Lower Mills but it's still fantastic.

Dee-lish Italian in the heart of South Boston. This is a great place to meet friends for lunch, a romantic dinner for 2 or gourmet pizza take-out. I have eaten my way up and down the entire menu and look forward to round 2! The ambiance is very casual, but the food is what you would expect in a fine dining establishment.

This place is wonderful. Great service, great food...and an experience that you would get in the North End for half the price. The chicken/sausage cacciatore is a must (the sauce is very flavorful with the right kick). Also, can't beat $4 glasses of wine!

My wife and I were in her hometown of Southie recently and we really wanted a sit down pizzeria type place for dinner. Unfortunately, it was 9:30 pm and we were mulling taking a $20 cab ride to the North End to get our fix. Serendipitously, we happened upon this spot that she had COMPLETELY forgot about for some reason. We went in and it totally fit our bill. Great antipasto and 'Za. The fried eggplant and ricotta was amazing. We'll be back net time we are town. Minus one star for the lame breadbasket that did not foretell the rest of the meal at all.

As I am sitting here writing this review... I'm asking myself..WHY ON EARTH am I writing a review on this tiny little restaurant in Southie... that I haven't been to in months...and months (verging on a year I bet), at midnight??? It really holds a special place in my heart. I used to live in Southie (my first living on my own in Boston experience). I absolutely LOVED it! In fact, Cafe Porto Bello was the first place I went to eat... on the day that I moved. My Dad, his friend that helped me to move, and I decided to go to this random bar (there are loads of random Irish Bars in Southie...I completely forget which one) and the bartender told us to go get dinner at Cafe Porto Bello where her sister worked. Ever since I was hooked. The wine list is crap...red or white really lol, VERY basic beer selection, no liquor, TINY dining room (maybe 10 tables?), no waiting area, usually only two or three servers on at a time (so when it's busy with a line out the door be prepared), and smallish menu. BUT, the atmosphere is SO endearing. It has this 'North End Transplant' feel in spite of all the quirks. The food was ALWAYS delicious and the chef was always accommodating... I would often ask for 'scrod a la rosa' (not on the menu)...basically pan seared scrod with spinach and marinara, olive oil and garlic...Boring? NO! so good seriously... NO PLACE ELSE would have done that for me (on a usual basis especially)...only a tiny, local place would be that cool :) This was my fall back place... and considering I was reeeally not a 'beer garden girl' or 'playwright girl' ugh...WAY too trendy and annoying... drunk annoying guys who think they are gods gift trying to pick up random chicks... loud, bad bar food, crowded... not my scene. (Lucky's is a WAY better, chill bar not too far from that area) Anyway...I would always bring friends to Cafe Porto Bello, I had good dates there, BAD dates :), all kinds of memories at this place... I'm writing about this place because I miss having that place right around the corner you can call your own :)

You can't get better Italian food outside the North End, not even at the Olive Garden....Yes, that's sarcasm! Seriously, the food is great and the prices are more than reasonable. They don't serve liquor, sorry alcoholics, but they do have beer and very good wine. Take note, they only accept cash, the place is infinitesimally small and walking there from the T is akin to hiking the Appalachian Trail.

I MISS this place. We moved out of Southie about 6 months ago, and neither of us can stop thinking about Porto Bello. We loved the tiny dining room, the very family-owned feel of the place. It was a 10 minute walk from our apt, or a 3 min car ride, parking on the street was rarely an issue (shocking, in Southie), and the food was reliably wonderful. We brought everyone here, and they all say the same. The food is tremendous, and addictive. We will definitely make it a point to visit every so often.

my favorite italian restaurant because the cooking reminds me so much of my brother-in-law Joe's cooking. Joe is from Sicily and never disappoints, neither does Cafe Porto Bello. I've met the owners Steve and Vinny just from going there so often. I love the fact that it is a very small restaurant and that the wait staff are very knowledgeable (sp?) - ask for Diane. The porkchops with vinegar peppers are to die for and you should get them with linguini with oil and garlic. The BEST thing there is the PIZZA!!! They have spoiled me because they don't have delivery and when I really want a pizza to eat at home, I have to get in the car and drive down there but, definitely worth every moment. I no longer can suffer with the masses who get their pizza delivered only to have it be gross, in a nutshell. So, GO! EAT! Mangia!!!!

Not sure why this place got such high reviews here. It's really just your average italian-american restaurant with an average menu. I've been there twice and both times couldn't believe that they served this very cheap thin white bread. Eating out is all about being pampered and being greeted by a basket of wonderbread just sets you off on the wrong foot. The first time I had a pretty good fettuchine alfredo, the second time a forgettable chicken dish. Prices aren't cheap. For italian, I'd travel to the South End to Giacomo's any day. It's worth the $10 cab ride.

Wow...you call this Italian? Over-cooked, rubber tasting veal, with a side of ketchup and egg noodles...awful! The worst part is reading the rest of the reviews on here claiming this place is good. What a waste Yelp is, seems like every restaurant gets 3 or 4 stars no matter how bad it is!

This place had a nice atmosphere and my friend liked her appetizer (it was eggplant with a kind of pesto sauce), but that was about it. Our server was just plain rude. She had no patience for us when my friend was trying to decide between two dishes, and she practically grabbed the money from our hands when we were trying to pay. And the place wasn't so crowded that they had to rush around. Finally, my chicken parm just tasted funny. I couldn't put my finger on it, just a weird aftertaste.

I lived in Southie for about 3 years before going to this hidden gem. This is a TINY little hole in the wall Italian restuaurant right in the middle of Irish Southie. It is sooooooo good....and so cheap! It is literally a tiny little room with maybe 10 tables. It is also cash only, so be sure to hit the ATM first! The pizzas and all pasta dishes are unreal. I always get the eggplant pesto sauce appetizer ( I have never even tried eggplant until stumbling upon this place), and it is seriously the best! You can get a bottle of wine (or 2 or 3!) and a full course meal for dirt cheap. Save yourself a trip to the crowded, expensive North End and try Cafe Porto Bello....you will not be disappointed!!

This quaint perfectly-sized Italian restaurant will leave you surprised that you are not in the North End. Service is fast and prices are reasonable. The raviolis with amaratto sauce are to die for. The pesto is amazing. The atmosphere is quiet and can be romantic, depending upon who you are dining with.

A taste of the North End right here in Southie! Great food, but the service isn't particularly attentive, and they only take cash. Luckily there's an ATM right across the street. Great place to take a date.

Pizza

Pizza is a famous Italian dish savored around the world. The entire credit for the popularity of Pizza in the United States goes to the chain of pizzerias all over the country. While the base and the texture of Pizza remains same across the globe, it's the toppings that differs from country to country. In the United States, you will find the top pizzerias serving pizzas with the toppings of mainly beef, bacon, chicken, ham, and sausage for the non-vegetarians. Other than these famous meat options, Pizzas with veg toppings such as mushrooms, pepperonis, garlic, tomatoes, spinach, etc. are also famous in most restaurants in the United States.

Irrespective of your locality, you will find a variety of different restaurants in your cities offering pizzas of all different types. Pizza is hot favorite among people of all ages in the United States. A large size pizza is enough to feed a family of 3 or 4 at large. Pizza is also the most preferred food whenever a group of friends is hanging out together. Pizza gained popularity in the United States after the American soldiers stationed in Italy returned from World War II.

Over the years, different pizzerias in the United States have developed their own respective regional variations. Pizza gained popularity as the iconic dish in the United States in the second half of the 20th century. Whether you prefer thin or thick crust pizza, you can find a pizza of your preference at the best pizza restaurants in your city.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
